A Safety Nightmare
Interlocking or jigsaw puzzle style mats may seem to be a practical purchase, because they appear to offer a great deal of configuration flexibility. All too often in use however this promise turns into a safety nightmare.
The typical "tiles" that make up the foundation of an interlocking mat are 18" (46cm) to 24" (60cm) long on a side. That means that for every 2.5 to 4 sq.feet (0.24 to 0.37sq M) of matting, there are between 5' (150cm) and 8' (245cm) of friction fit mechanical "seams" surrounding each tile. Many of these style mats are made of an open cell material that absorbs a variety of liquids, particularly swelling and deforming when exposed to oils. This swelling not only has the potential to create a trip hazard at every seam, it is also unlikely that, once exposed, the mat and the interlocking seam will ever return to its original state.
In order to combat this very real problem, some interlocking mat marketers have begun molding tiles out of a non-porous, hard plastic. This helps eliminate the expanding and swelling problem, but it can create another equally hazardous condition where the surface of the mat pools liquids which become a dangerous slip hazard, while making the mat exceptionally uncomfortable.
ERGOMAT mats avoid each of these dangerous conditions by constructing single piece mats to the exact size required. We use only premium virgin materials that are engineered to stand up to specifically anticipated liquid and chemical exposures, and these mats are always beveled on every side to eliminate trip hazards both when entering the mat, and when working on the mat surface. Ergomat mats can be customized to an exact shape and size. Our standard sizes are 2', 3', 4', 5' and 6' (60, 90, 120, 150 & 180 cm) and can be made to all requested lengths. We also offer custom tailored installations so that the mat is a perfect fit to your working area. And any entrance to the mat will always be beveled to avoid trip hazards.
